Professor Janusz Grzelak has passed away

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Professor Janusz Grzelak — an outstanding scholar, social activist, citizen, and above all, a Friend.

Professor Grzelak played a key role in shaping the academic and public life of Poland. He served as Deputy Minister of Education, Vice-Rector for International Relations at the University of Warsaw, and Dean of the Faculty of Psychology.

One of his most lasting contributions was the creation of the English-language psychology program — now known as the Warsaw International Studies in Psychology (WISP) — which began in 2005 and opened the Faculty of Psychology UW to students from around the world.

As a professor of social psychology, his work was driven by a deep interest in social issues — from interdependence and social orientations to the dynamics of conflict and how societies relate to public goods. He published widely and mentored many students who carry forward his academic legacy. In recognition of his lifelong dedication to social justice, he was awarded the prestigious Morton Deutsch Award.

He collaborated with many international universities, including institutions in the United States, the Netherlands, and Austria. He was also a co-founder of the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights and a member of numerous scientific associations.

But beyond his impressive professional achievements, those who knew Professor Grzelak will remember him most for his warmth, openness, and genuine care for others. He believed in helping people, breaking down barriers, and always taking an interest in those around him. He had a unique ability to connect with people — thoughtful, witty, and always surrounded by students, friends, and colleagues from all over the world. Being in his presence was a real privilege.

Janusz, we will miss you very much.
